  • Viruses and Worms

One of the most common ways to pick up viruses and worms are through infected emails. Although a lot of worms are picked up simply by having an unpatched version of Windows online without a firewall. If the latter was the case, you would have received a portscanning warning instead.

If a specific type of virus is listed in the complaint, we'll include this information in any warning emails or letters we send. This information should help you fix the problem. If we don't have this information, you'll receive a generic email virus warning. In either case we recommend updating your antivirus and running a full system scan.

Viruses will send themselves out without your knowledge as long as they have access to the internet. That's why it's important to disconnect your computer from the internet until you are ready to fix the problem.

    Determining the Source

We use the IP Address in the message header and not the email address in the "From" field to determine the source of the virus being spread. We do this because email addresses are often forged, making IP Addresses much more reliable. Email viruses generally use return addresses harvested from address books, etc on the computers they infect. They will also use these same email addresses to send themselves out to, in the hopes of infecting them.

    Road Runner Virus Filtering

Road Runner inbound email servers filter all incoming email to Road Runner email addresses for viruses. However, there may be a certain period of time from when a new virus hits to when the servers are updated that users may be susceptible.

    Antivirus and Removal Tools

The type of antivirus doesn't matter as much as having the virus definition files for that particular program up to date. We have a list of different vendors on our links page.

If you know exactly what type of virus you have, there are some sites that have free removal tools available for download. Two of these sites are www.sarc.com and www.nod32.com
